“What We Carry” — Bones with sterling silver inlay 2017- ongoing.

The scapula is the shoulder blade — the place from which we reach, toward one another or away from one another (cold shoulder.) The choice is always ours.

On each of these bone sculptures, a single word, or sometimes a word on each side has been inlaid in sterling silver. The words are not painted, written, nor printed — but pressed into the bone itself. Because these are not abstract concepts. They are not aspirational posters or motivational sentiments. They are structural. They are load-bearing. They are the things we are actually made of, carried in the deepest architecture of who we are.

Sawubona. Love Unspent. Courage. Hope. Empathy. Faith. Trust. Joy. Desire.

We do not lack for these things. That is the quiet insistence of this work. We are not broken beyond repair, not empty, not incapable. Every one of these qualities lives and has always lived inside us — waiting. The question this collection asks is not whether we have them.

The question is what we choose to do with them.

Each piece stands alone. Together they form a portrait of the fully realized human being we are all capable of becoming — if we choose to reach.
