“Love, Unspent” -2019

A single scapula — the shoulder blade, the place from which we reach toward one another — carries one word inlaid in sterling silver along its surface:

LOVE.

It is in there. It has always been in there. Not as metaphor, not as sentiment, but as something real and generative — produced in the deepest part of us, in the marrow, where life itself is made. We are capable of it. We are built for it. It lives in our bones.

And yet.

To carry love is not the same as to give it. To be capable of it is not the same as to choose it. Every day we wake with this extraordinary thing inside us — this capacity to reach, to soften, to see another person and say I recognize you, you matter, you are not alone — and every day we decide, quietly, whether to spend it or keep it locked inside.

So much love, unspent. So much warmth, withheld. Kept safe and close and private while the world outside grows colder.

The bone holds the word. The word holds the question.

What are you saving it for?
